Mapalé is Toronto’s Colombian band…their Latin sound includes Afro Cuban Rhythms...Salsa, Merengue, Cumbian and the Latin Jazz.
Mapalé won the “Latin American Achievement Awards 2005 - Best Musical Expression”.
In Colombia Mapalé is a traditional dance of African origins, from Guinea to be precise. It is sensual and dynamic- a flirtatious exercise meant to free the spirit, celebrate the body and inspire the soul- much like the music of Mapalé.
Carlos Bastidas is the artistic director of the band; he holds a Bachelor and a Masters in Music from the University of Ottawa. He is a professional musician and music educator in the Toronto area. Carlos works as a member of the faculty of the Royal Conservatory of music.
So far Mapalé has stuck close to home, building a base in Toronto while working on their debut recording. At the Global Café Festival, Word on the Street, Hispanic Fiesta, Parkdale Cultural Festival, Celebrate Toronto Street Festival at Dundas Square and others, the band has accumulated a loyal following. This is bringing them more and more lucrative performance invitations. Now Mapalé is planning to go beyond the Greater Toronto Area and take their music as far as they can.
“The pieces recorded by Bastidas and Mapalé on “Pasion Latina” are musically very well-crafted, with high quality of interpretation. They are bringing some of the beautiful, lesser-Known Colombian rhythms, to audiences in this part of the continent” - Spanish Daily Newspaper-El Popular, January 21, 2005 - “(Mapale) your performance was certainly a highlight!” - Maggie Rust, The Word on the Street Toronto - Para contrataciones de Mapalé contactar a Jorge Perez a jperez@jepagency.com
